World-renowned ultra-endurance athlete Lael Wilcox, known for her cycling feats and record-setting times, came through Park Forest on Sept. 11 around 5 p.m.
Wilcox was on the final leg of her attempt to set the world record for the fastest woman to circumnavigate the globe by bike.
Beginning her journey in Chicago's Grant Park in May, Wilcox completed 18,125 miles in 108 days across four continents and 22 countries. Upon completing her attempt, she was received at Grant Park by family, friends, and the Illinois cycling community.
To get to Grant Park in downtown Chicago, Wilcox had to pass through the Village of Park Forest, traversing several miles of Old Plank Road Trail.
Old Plank Road Trail is one of the oldest rail-to-trail conversions in the country. It stretches from Chicago Heights to Joliet and connects to forest preserves in Will and Cook Counties.
The trail offers Park Forest residents the opportunity to enjoy nature by walking or biking while experiencing unique bits of American history along its mile markers. It provides outdoor excursions and connects to neighboring towns like Olympia Fields and Frankfort, creating an environmentally friendly means of travel.
Residents can access the trail via several throughways in Park Forest. There is a parking lot on the east side of Western Avenue just after Sesto Park, and an additional parking lot is located at Logan Park on Orchard Drive.
Wilcox, known for dreaming up a new adventure while in the thick of a current one, told bystanders at Grant Park that she does not know what is to come but is looking forward to whatever it may be.
