[ARCHIVED] Park Forest Police Department launches new private security camera program

Camera Sponsor Program 24

The Park Forest Police Department rolls out a Private Security Camera Incentive Program in April to help deter and solve crime within the Village.

Under the program, an individual, business, or nonprofit can apply with the Park Forest Police Department on or after April 15., to receive a rebate of up to $200 to offset the cost of one forward-facing security camera on the applicant's property. Those who are interested can apply by clicking here.

Park Forest Police Chief Brian Rzyski said the program aims to prevent crime while not invading anyone's privacy.

"The goal is to make our community safer by having our residents participate in the program, which will make criminals think twice before committing a crime here in Park Forest," Rzyski said.

The Park Forest Police Department will not have access to live video from the cameras. Additionally, the police department will collect, disseminate, and use the footage for official law enforcement purposes only.

Rzyski said the Park Forest Police Department has allocated $20,000 to fund this program. He said he's hopeful many people will participate and purchase a camera - so the department can continue to offer rebates in the future once the current funding is exhausted.

Interested parties must complete the program application and provide proof of security camera purchase within 90 days of submitting it. Rzyski said applicants can then purchase their security camera and do not have to wait for a response or approval. However, participants must submit the camera's make, model, and serial number and verify that the camera is installed.

A Park Forest Police officer will verify any camera a resident or business owner installed.
