The Village of Park Forest Commission on Human Relations is celebrating Women's History Month by recognizing local women who have served in the military.

Community Relations Manager Evelyn Randle collaborated with the Park Forest Veterans Commission to identify women veterans from the Village. She arranged for eight poster boards featuring these women to be created, which are now on display in the lobby of Village Hall. Randle emphasized that these women often go unrecognized for their contributions.

"During Women's History Month, we wanted to spotlight women veterans," Randle said. "Many of these women faced doubt despite their efforts and commitment. It's fitting that Park Forest, which was established for veterans, now honors these ladies before it's too late."

In Randle's collaboration with the Veterans Commission, Randle highlighted eight women: Lorraine Williams, Anita Frances Williams, Barbara J. West, Kimberly Spivey, and Yvette Jones-Swanson, all of whom served in the U.S. Army. Additionally, she recognized Essie L. Hall, Ann Marie LaFrance, and Gloria J. Parker, who served in the U.S. Navy.

Randle expressed her hope to identify and connect with more women veterans, emphasizing the importance of their contributions so that the dedication ceremony at Village Hall can expand and recognize their impact.

"There are countless women veterans whose stories we have yet to discover," Randle noted. "My goal is to uplift and highlight their experiences during Women's History Month, ensuring that their sacrifices and achievements are honored."

Before the board meeting on Monday night, the Commission on Human Relations organized a reception for eight women veterans. The event served as a gathering space where these women shared personal anecdotes and reflections about their time in service, fostering camaraderie and mutual support over a delicious spread of refreshments.

After the reception, Mayor Joseph A. Woods officially signed the Women's History Month proclamation during the board meeting. He took a moment to express his gratitude to the veterans, acknowledging their bravery, resilience, and invaluable contributions to the country. This stately declaration not only celebrated the women present but also aimed to inspire a broader recognition of women's roles in the military throughout the community.
