Every year, hundreds of children die in home fires and thousands are injured. Many factors account for these statistics. For the youngest victims, it is often fear and a lack of basic knowledge about fire. The Park Forest Fire Department uses magic, puppets and a variety of props in an effort to help these children learn basic fire safety. These basics include stop, drop and roll, the dangers of fire-play and an introduction to smoke detectors. Young children may also be afraid of firefighters when dressed in all their protective gear. Often in a fire, they hide from the firefighter instead of reaching out for help. When children watch a firefighter dress in protective gear, listen to the sounds of his breathing and touch the fabric of the bunker gear, their fears seem to melt away.
