Park Forest urges residents not to rake, blow leaves into the street

Village of Park Forest - Public Works News Posted on October 09, 2025

As fall arrives and trees in Park Forest shed their leaves, the Village’s Public Works Department is reminding residents not to blow or rake leaves into the street. This seasonal reminder comes as more homeowners begin to clear their yards amid cooler temperatures and increased leaf fall.

Blowing or raking leaves into the street can lead to several problems. According to Nick Christie, the assistant director of Public Works in Park Forest, this practice creates safety and environmental hazards.

“When leaves collect in the streets, they can block storm drains, leading to localized flooding during rain events,” Christie said. “It also makes it more challenging for our crews to keep the streets clean and safe for drivers and pedestrians.”

In addition to drainage issues, leaves on the roadway can become slippery when wet, posing hazards for vehicles and bicyclists. They also contribute to water pollution, as decaying leaves wash into the storm sewer system, which directly drains into local waterways.

Christie said that proper disposal is both simple and essential.

“We ask residents to use the Village’s yard waste collection program instead,” Christie said. “Place leaves and other yard waste in compostable paper bags for pick-up on your regular collection day. It’s a straightforward step that helps protect our community.”

The Village also reminds residents that sweeping or blowing leaves into the street is against Village ordinance and may result in fines.

“Doing the right thing with your leaves keeps our neighborhoods looking clean and prevents bigger problems down the line,” Christie added.

Park Forest officials encourage everyone to work together to keep the streets clear this fall as the community prepares for the winter months ahead.
