Park Forest installs additional speed limit signs to promote safe driving

The Village of Park Forest is implementing a project to install additional speed limit signs throughout the community to promote safe driving habits among motorists.

Nick Christie, the assistant director of public works, explained that his department has collaborated closely with the Park Forest Police Department to place these signs across various neighborhoods and main thoroughfares strategically. He highlighted that speeding has become one of the most frequent complaints from residents, and the primary objective of this initiative is to reinforce the message that the standard speed limit in the area is 30 miles per hour unless otherwise specified.

"We have ordered approximately 25 new speed limit signs and have already installed about half of them on key village-owned roadways, particularly in areas with high pedestrian traffic and residential zones," Christie said. "We hope that by increasing visibility of these signs, we can encourage drivers to be more mindful of their speed and ultimately enhance the safety of our roads for all users—drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians alike."

Christie said the Village is implementing a comprehensive strategy to combat speeding, which includes installing clearly marked speed limit signs throughout high-traffic areas. Earlier this month, the Park Forest Police Department intensified its patrol efforts to deter impaired driving, specifically targeting the periods leading up to St. Patrick's Day, a time known for increased alcohol consumption.

In April, which has been designated as Distracted Driving Month, the police department is preparing to launch initiatives to raise awareness about the dangers of distracted driving. Chief Brian Rzyski emphasized the importance of these efforts, especially with warmer weather approaching. As more residents and visitors take to the roads for outdoor activities, he said the department is committed to ensuring the safety of all community members by promoting responsible driving practices and reducing accidents.
