Forecasters predict a shift towards a snowier pattern in the Great Lakes region in the coming weeks, suggesting that the Village of Park Forest may soon experience significant snowfall.
As winter weather approaches, many residents may be curious about the Village's snow removal process and how the Public Works Department prepares for these snowstorms.
Public Works Director Roderick Ysaguirre explains that his team maintains 72 miles of roadways throughout the Village, including residential streets, main thoroughfares, and heavily trafficked areas requiring prompt attention.
Plowing all the streets can be time-consuming, particularly during extended snowfall or severe storm events when snow accumulation can be substantial. Ysaguirre says the department employs a strategic approach to ensure that priority routes are cleared first, enabling emergency services and residents to navigate safely.
Ysaguirre emphasizes the importance of community cooperation during these events, urging residents to remain patient as crews work diligently to keep the roads safe and accessible.
"Plowing usually starts when there is an accumulation of at least two inches of snow," Ysaguirre explained. "Three 2.5-ton snowplows are assigned to clear the Village's two main salt and plow routes in tandem. Once these primary routes are completed, the six trucks will pair up into three teams of two to begin plowing the secondary and local streets throughout the Village."
Ysaguirre explains that the snow removal process can take several hours and may be repeated as needed. The main routes in the Village include Orchard Drive, Blackhawk Drive, Indianwood Boulevard, Westwood Drive, Wildwood Drive, Indiana Street, Illinois Street, Shabbona Drive, Lakewood Boulevard, North Street, Dogwood Street, Alleghany Street, and Algonquin Street.
Residents living in multi-family areas, co-ops, condos, townhomes, and rental properties, or those who belong to a homeowners association (HOA), typically have contracts with external companies for snow and ice removal. If you have questions about snow removal, Ysaguirre recommends contacting your management office or HOA for assistance.
Park Forest has a Snow Route Parking Ban that takes effect when two inches or more of snow and ice accumulate on the roads. Ysaguirre notes that this ban enables Public Works crews to clear the roads and parking areas more effectively. The ban remains in effect until the snow and ice from the storm have been completely removed.
