Hundreds of law enforcement officers, family members, and community residents gathered Saturday at Tinley Park High School to honor the life of Park Forest Police Detective Timothy M. Jones, nearly a decade after a line-of-duty shooting left him paralyzed.

His passing comes almost 10 years after the March 2016 shooting that left him critically wounded while making an arrest. Jones was 34.

The celebration of life took place at Jones’ alma mater, drawing uniformed officers from across the Chicago area and the Midwest. The gymnasium filled as bagpipes played, marking the end of watch for the detective, whose perseverance and spirit left a lasting impact on his department and the broader community.

At the time of the incident, Jones had been with the Park Forest Police Department for just over a year when he was shot multiple times while arresting an armed suspect. He suffered severe head and neck injuries, including a traumatic brain injury, and doctors initially believed he would not survive.

Despite these odds, Jones survived for nearly a decade after the shooting. During this time, he continued to inspire his colleagues, friends, and residents alike.

“May we honor him not only with words today, but by living with the same sense of duty, compassion, and respect for one another that he demonstrated throughout his life,” Park Forest Police Chief Brian Rzyski said during the service.

Throughout the ceremony, speakers described Jones as a dedicated officer whose smile and positive outlook endured despite his challenges. Laughter often followed moments of mourning as friends and family shared stories from before and after the shooting.

“He fought,” said Bri Wayne, Jones’ god sister. “He was still a great guy, a great brother. He still did everything for his family and looked out for everyone around him.”

Honoring his contributions, the street outside the Park Forest Police Department was renamed Honorary Officer Tim Jones Way in 2018. A few years later, the department promoted Jones, giving him the honorary title of detective—one of his lifelong goals.

In addition to these honors, Jones’ legacy lives on through the Suburban Law Enforcement Academy, where the Timothy Jones Physical Fitness Award is presented annually to a recruit.

His impact was echoed by Park Forest Mayor Joseph A. Woods, who called Jones a hero whose sacrifice reached beyond his official service.

“Tim did not lose his life — he gave it to an entire community,” Woods said.

Even in death, Jones continued his service by helping 75 people through organ donation, according to his family.

As the service concluded, attendees reflected on a life defined not only by tragedy but also by resilience, commitment, and unwavering courage, demonstrating Jones’ enduring influence.
