Park Forest to open Tool Lending Library Sept. 27

Residents of Park Forest will soon have an affordable way to tackle do-it-yourself projects. The Village is set to unveil its Tool Lending Library during a grand opening event on Sept. 27, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Discovery Center Room, located on the right corner of the Park Forest Aqua Center at 30 N. Orchard Drive.

The lending program will operate on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon, providing residents with free access to a variety of household and garden tools. Village leaders stress that this initiative not only offers a cost-effective resource but also aligns with long-term sustainability and community engagement goals.

“This is really about neighbors helping neighbors,” said Carrie Malfeo, Park Forest’s sustainability coordinator. “By sharing tools, we’re reducing waste, saving money, and giving residents the opportunity to take pride in their homes and yards. A tool library is a small idea that can create significant change.”

The project has been in the works for several years and faced delays due to difficulties in finding enough volunteers to staff the library. However, a dedicated group of residents has stepped forward, and training sessions have been held to prepare for the launch.

“The library will only succeed if the community embraces it,” Malfeo stated. “We’re fortunate to have committed volunteers, but we’re always looking for more help to ensure it operates smoothly.”

The initial inventory includes a starter set of tools purchased by the Village’s Sustainability Office and Environment Commission. Officials anticipate that the collection will expand as residents and community partners contribute gently used or new equipment.

Organizers aim for the Tool Lending Library to meet multiple needs: providing residents with access to tools they may only use occasionally, promoting resource reuse, and fostering community involvement through shared participation.

“Not everyone needs to buy a power drill or a hedge trimmer,” Malfeo explained. “This library allows every resident to tackle projects, big or small, while also reducing clutter and consumption. It benefits everyone financially, positively impacts the environment, and enhances the Park Forest community.”

The public is invited to attend the grand opening, where staff and volunteers will explain how the library works and how residents can get involved.
