Park Forest Public Works director explains how to prevent your pipes from bursting this winter

Following a series of back-to-back snowstorms this week, the Village of Park Forest is bracing for a wave of frigid air that is expected to be among the coldest of the season. Public Works Director Roderick Ysaguirre is urging residents to take preventive measures to safeguard their plumbing from freezing.

The National Weather Service in Chicago is predicting a "significant" snowfall of 6 to 10 inches from today through Saturday. As the storm gives way to a frigid air mass sweeping across the Great Lakes, temperatures will plummet. Morning highs on Monday will struggle to reach five degrees, accompanied by bitter low overnight temperatures that can pose a serious threat to unprotected pipes.

Ysaguirre has outlined a series of strategies that residents can implement to help prevent their pipes from bursting during this severe arctic outbreak.

"Keep garage doors closed at all times, especially if there are water supply lines running through the garage," Ysaguirre emphasized. "Additionally, open the cabinet doors under your kitchen and bathroom sinks to encourage the circulation of warmer air around the plumbing, particularly if your sinks are positioned against an exterior wall."

The recommended minimum temperature for a vacant space or other area where there is a potential for freezing pipes is 55 degrees Fahrenheit or higher. Ysaguirre also recommends allowing a slow, steady drip of cold water from faucets connected to exposed pipes. Even a gentle trickle can keep the water flowing and significantly reduce the risk of freezing.

Ysaguirre emphasized the importance of being cautious when thawing frozen pipes. He advised residents to heat the frozen section of the pipe using an electric heating pad, a hair dryer, towels soaked in hot water, or a portable space heater near the pipe. However, it is crucial to keep an eye on and continually monitor your efforts to keep these heat sources away from flammable materials. Avoid using any heat source with an open flame, as excessive heat can damage the pipes or potentially start a fire.

Once the water begins to flow at normal pressure, check all other faucets to determine if there are any additional frozen pipes. Ysaguirre also warned that if a pipe bursts, you should locate and turn off your water supply valve, if possible. This valve is typically located at the water meter or where the main line enters the house.

If a pipe bursts, you cannot locate the frozen section, the frozen area is inaccessible, or you are unable to thaw the pipe. It is best to call a licensed plumber for assistance.
