Firefighter/Paramedic Jonas Campbell has been named the Park Forest Fire Department’s 2025 Firefighter of the Year, honoring a member who exemplifies the highest fire service standards.

The award was presented Saturday, with Fire Chief Mark Cotrano praising Campbell’s professionalism, positive attitude, and dedication to the department and community.

This annual award recognizes firefighters who demonstrate professional qualities and maintain an outstanding service record.

Cotrano said Campbell’s presence since joining the department in 2023 has been immediately noticeable, often bringing energy that lifts team morale.

“Jonas always brings an exceptional, positive attitude to the fire station,” Cotrano said.

Cotrano noted Campbell is respected for his dependability and willingness to tackle any task. His easygoing personality and humor build camaraderie, even during stressful times.

Beyond emergency response, Campbell is a key part of the department’s CPR training program, serving as a dependable instructor. Cotrano said his calm teaching style ensures students leave confident and prepared.

“His dedication to this program strengthens public safety and reflects his service commitment,” Cotrano said.

Campbell also mentors newer firefighters and students, guiding them with patience and encouragement.

Outside the firehouse, Cotrano noted Campbell’s strong family commitment, his care for his parents, and his embrace of his role as “fun uncle.”

This year, the Richton Park native married his wife, Brittany, and they welcomed their first child, Candace.

Cotrano said Campbell’s character and leadership set a strong example for future firefighters.

“Jonas Campbell exemplifies the best of the Park Forest Fire Department,” Cotrano said. “His professionalism, generosity, and quiet leadership make him a deserving honoree and a beacon for the fire service’s future.”

A Park Forest resident turned to social media over the weekend to raise concerns about a neighbor allegedly burning garbage in a backyard and asked who to contact since the home is located in an unincorporated portion of the Village.

On Tuesday, Park Forest Fire Chief Mark Cotrano said the answer is simple: call 911 in an emergency, or the non-emergency number, 708-748-4700, and first responders will respond — regardless of which side of the county line a resident lives on.

“Oftentimes, people vent on social media about things that are happening in the community, but reaching out to police and fire via calling should be their first line of defense,” Cotrano said. “Posts go viral, but they can also get lost in the shuffle. The Village doesn’t have a team monitoring social media around the clock, so calling is the best option.”

Cotrano said Village officials were unable to locate the original post to gather more details or contact the resident directly.

“We want people to understand that if something is actively happening and it concerns safety, the fastest way to get help there is by calling,” he said.

According to Cotrano, burning garbage, trash, leaves, and yard waste is strictly prohibited in Park Forest. The village’s municipal code limits what may be burned outdoors, primarily allowing only small recreational fires in approved fire pits using clean, dry, untreated wood.

“The Village’s code limits what can be burned outdoors,” Cotrano said. “Fire pits may be used only with clean, dry, non-painted or treated wood. Other than that, residents shouldn’t burn other things.”

Burning household garbage or yard debris can health risks to neighbors and can be a nuisance, especially those with respiratory conditions. Improperly controlled fires can also spread quickly, particularly during dry or windy conditions.

Cotrano noted that with temperatures trending warmer this week, more residents are spending time outdoors and beginning spring yard cleanup. However, he cautioned that recent dry conditions increase the risk of fire spreading beyond its intended area.

“We haven’t seen a significant amount of rain or snow recently,” Cotrano said. “When vegetation is dry, it doesn’t take much for a small fire to extend into grass or nearby structures.”

Even in unincorporated areas within Village boundaries, fire protection services respond to calls for service. Cotrano said residents should not hesitate to report unsafe situations.

“If you see something that concerns you, make the call,” Cotrano said. “That’s what we’re here for.”

Village officials encourage residents with questions about open burning regulations to contact the Park Forest Fire Department directly for clarification before lighting any outdoor fire.

The award is open to all ranks within the Park Forest Fire Department. The recipient is selected by the department’s awards committee, which consists of fellow firefighters. Candidates are discussed extensively before a recommendation is made to the fire chief for final approval.

Firefighters who have received awards for valor, honor, life-saving, commendation, merit, and citation are automatically considered for the Firefighter of the Year Award.

The Village of Park Forest is under a Fire Weather Watch from Wednesday morning through Wednesday evening as unseasonably warm temperatures, dry air, and gusty winds combine to create elevated fire danger across northern Illinois.

The National Weather Service in Chicago issued the watch Tuesday afternoon, citing forecast highs in the 60s, relative humidity values as low as 15 percent, and southwest winds of 15 to 25 mph, with gusts reaching up to 40 mph. The watch includes Cook and Will counties, along with several surrounding counties in the region.

According to the National Weather Service, the combination of warm temperatures, low humidity, and strong winds could allow any fire that develops to ignite and spread rapidly. While some larger vegetation may retain moisture, officials note that finer fuels — such as dry grass and brush — are primed for quick fire growth under these conditions.

Park Forest Fire Chief Mark Cotrano urged residents to take the watch seriously and avoid outdoor burning.

“These are the types of conditions where a small spark can turn into a fast-moving grass or brush fire,” Cotrano said. “With humidity this low and winds gusting up to 40 miles per hour, fires can spread before crews even arrive on scene.”

Cotrano said residents should refrain from burning yard waste, properly discard smoking materials, and avoid using equipment that could produce sparks outdoors.

“We’re asking the community to be proactive,” he said. “Secure trailer chains, be cautious with grills, and never leave any open flame unattended. A Fire Weather Watch means the potential is there, and we all play a role in preventing a dangerous situation.”

Officials encourage residents to stay weather-aware and monitor updates as conditions develop on Wednesday.

The Park Forest Fire Department has upgraded its vehicle extrication equipment, replacing aging hydraulic tools with a new battery-powered system designed to improve speed, safety, and performance during serious crashes.

Village officials approved the purchase of the Genesis SLI 18-volt extrication tool system in July at a total cost of $39,453.60, which includes a trade-in credit for older equipment.

Fire Chief Mark Cotrano told the Village Board the department’s previous tools — some dating back more than a decade — were reaching the end of their useful life. Many were corded hydraulic units that required costly maintenance, including hose replacements and component rebuilds.

Rather than spend an estimated $10,000 to keep outdated tools operational, the department opted to transition fully to the newer battery-powered platform, now considered the industry standard.

Firefighter/paramedic Joseph Spanier, who has been with the department for more than 10 years, said the upgrade represents a significant advancement in both capability and efficiency.

“We had some equipment that was aging and, in some cases, obsolete,” Spanier said. “These new tools are the top of the line. You can’t get any better than this right now.”

Unlike older corded systems that relied on 100-foot hydraulic lines, the new battery-powered tools allow firefighters to operate without being tethered to a power unit. That flexibility can be critical when vehicles are off-road, in fields, or in difficult-to-access areas.

The tools deliver up to 10,000 pounds per square inch of cutting force and are designed to handle modern high-tensile vehicle materials, including boron steel commonly found in newer vehicles. Firefighters use the equipment to cut through doors, peel back roofs, spread dashboards, and remove steering columns when occupants are trapped.

In certain cases, the tools can even operate underwater, allowing crews to access submerged vehicles.

“If someone is pinned in a vehicle, these tools let us create the space we need quickly,” Spanier said. “That can make all the difference.”

The department’s extrication capabilities extend beyond Park Forest. Through the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS), Park Forest crews are automatically dispatched to assist neighboring communities, including Richton Park, Matteson, University Park, South Chicago Heights, and Flossmoor, during serious crashes.

“We’re known division-wide for the tools we carry and the capabilities we bring,” Spanier said.

Officials said the investment ensures Park Forest firefighters remain equipped with modern, reliable technology to respond to vehicle crashes, which occur regularly throughout the region.

While most daily calls involve emergency medical services, Spanier said the ability to perform rapid extrications remains a critical component of the department’s mission.

“We train on these tools multiple times a year,” Spanier said. “When the call comes in, we’re ready.

With winter temperatures settling in, Park Forest Fire Chief Mark Cotrano is urging residents to stay off frozen lakes and ponds until conditions are truly safe.

While cold mornings may make local ponds and lakes appear solid, the ice has not yet formed thick enough to safely support people, Cotrano said. Early winter freezes often create only a thin surface layer that can be deceptive and unpredictable.

“Even though it looks solid, that ice can be dangerously thin,” Cotrano said. “We’ve only had a few days below freezing. Those early freezes create surface ice that can vary a lot in thickness from one spot to the next.” Ice thickness can fluctuate dramatically across a small area, and solid-looking sections just a few feet apart may hide dangerously weak ice beneath the surface.

According to commonly accepted safety guidelines, ice should generally be at least four inches thick before it can safely support a person on foot. That guidance applies only to clear, uniform ice — a condition that is rare during early winter and can be compromised by snow cover, moving water, vegetation, or recent temperature changes.

“We don’t want to see anyone fall through,” Cotrano added. “Cold water can incapacitate someone in minutes. A rescue on frozen water is one of the most dangerous situations our crews face.” In addition to the risk to individuals, ice rescues place first responders in hazardous conditions, requiring specialized equipment and training.

Fire and rescue officials are encouraging residents to enjoy winter activities from safe areas along the shoreline and to keep children and pets well away from ice edges. Residents are also reminded that no ice is ever 100 percent safe, even during prolonged cold spells.

Before planning any recreational activity on frozen water, residents are urged to check with local authorities for current conditions and official safety guidance.

Cook County has completed major upgrades to the Park Forest Fire Training Site, a regional facility critical to firefighter training, as part of ongoing investment in the south suburban community. On Tuesday, Board President Toni Preckwinkle, Commissioner Donna Miller, and Park Forest Mayor Joseph A. Woods marked this milestone at the site.

The event celebrated the completion of two Build Up Cook projects at the regional training facility, which is one of the busiest in the area and serves more than 500 firefighters from over 50 departments each year. Upgrades included a full roof replacement, installation of a new pry door, updated burn containers for live-fire exercises, and major water system improvements. Cook County designated $327,577 for water system upgrades and $407,476 for training-related improvements.

“These improvements strengthen one of the region’s most critical training sites,” Preckwinkle said. “Every community in Cook County deserves well-trained, well-equipped first responders. Through Build Up Cook, we are strengthening the infrastructure that keeps our residents safe.”

The Park Forest Fire Training Site, located at 55 N. Orchard Drive, has served the region since the early 1960s and was dedicated in 1965 to Park Forest’s only line-of-duty fatality, Captain Adolph “Shorty” Pfeifer. The site features a mock two-story residential structure with burn containers that simulate smoke-filled environments, allowing departments to conduct live-fire drills, search-and-rescue operations, and other essential training. The Park Forest facility is used year-round by the Park Forest, Matteson, and Richton Park Fire Departments; the Prairie State College Fire Academy; South Suburban Combined Agency Training; and the Illinois Fire Service Institute.

Woods highlighted that the county’s investment extends beyond the training facility. Nearly $500,000 has been dedicated to reconstructing Forest Boulevard, a vital roadway in Park Forest’s DownTown. This road project and the fire training facility upgrades are both funded by the Build Up Cook program, which is supported by a $30.5 million allocation from the American Rescue Plan Act.

“This is a great project for the whole region,” Woods said. “Cook County’s investment in Park Forest shows that the Southland is being seen and supported. For far too long, communities like ours have been overlooked. These projects change that.”

Woods said the upgrades prepare Park Forest not only for immediate needs but also for long-term regional resilience. 

“When federal, county, and local leaders work together, we can deliver real, lasting benefits. These improvements will strengthen our emergency response capabilities and our infrastructure for generations to come," Woods said.

Commissioner Miller echoed the importance of equity in capital investments across Cook County. She said Build Up Cook ensures that infrastructure dollars reach communities that need them most. She also mentioned these upgrades in Park Forest demonstrate what happens when we commit to fairness and collaboration.

As autumn leaves cover lawns in Park Forest, local officials are reminding residents that burning leaves is prohibited under Village code and may violate state environmental regulations.

Illinois law does not impose a statewide ban on leaf burning, but state rules restrict open burning in densely populated areas. Under Illinois Environmental Protection Agency regulations, any municipality or area within one mile of a town with 1,000 or more residents is considered a “restricted area.” In these areas, only landscape waste generated on the property may be burned, and only under conditions permitted by local ordinances.

In Park Forest, the Village’s code limits what can be burned outdoors. Fire pits may be used only with “clean, dry, non-painted or treated” wood. Burning leaves, paper, garbage, or other debris is prohibited.

Deputy Fire Chief Taylor Bordewyk said dry weather can cause even small piles of burning leaves to spread quickly. 

“A small pile of leaves can turn into a dangerous blaze in seconds,” Bordewyk said. “Smoke from burning leaves also affects air quality and can aggravate respiratory conditions.”

According to the Illinois EPA, burning leaves releases pollutants including benzene, formaldehyde, and dioxins. These substances can contribute to air pollution and may pose health risks to sensitive groups such as children, older adults, and people with asthma.

Smoke from open burning can also reduce visibility on streets and interfere with nearby firefighting operations. In several nearby municipalities, open burning of leaves, brush, or garbage is also prohibited, with penalties that may include fines or misdemeanor charges.

Park Forest provides curbside yard waste collection as an alternative to burning. Residents can place yard waste in brown biodegradable bags marked with Village stickers. Stickers cost $3.30 each and are available for purchase at Village Hall through the Water Department.

“Proper disposal options are available for residents,” Bordewyk said. “The goal is to prevent unnecessary fires and maintain air quality in the community.”

The Park Forest Fire Department has installed more than 55 smoke alarms in local homes as part of a statewide safety campaign and is encouraging more residents to sign up for free installations.

The effort is part of the Be Alarmed! Smoke Alarm Installation Statewide Blitz, a coordinated initiative involving hundreds of fire agencies across Illinois. The program, held Oct. 19–25 during National Fire Prevention Month, aims to increase the number of working smoke alarms in homes and educate the public about fire safety.

Deputy Chief Taylor Bordewyk said the response from Park Forest residents has been positive, but the department still has plenty of alarms available.

“The blitz has been fairly successful so far — we installed over 55 detectors last week and have more on the books for this week,” Bordewyk said. “The residents were very appreciative and said it was comforting to know they were protected. We still have plenty available, so we’d love to send that message out again and get more installed.”

The statewide initiative is organized by the Illinois Fire Service, Camp I Am Me, the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal, and the Illinois Community Risk Reduction Coalition Task Force.

In 2024, the Park Forest Fire Department responded to 5,189 emergency calls, including 1,287 fire responses. Of those, 53 were structure fires, according to the department’s annual report. Fire officials noted that several of those incidents involved missing or non-operational smoke alarms.

Residents who participate in the program will also receive safety information on how to test and maintain their smoke alarms.

Bordewyk reminded residents that rental properties and apartments are typically not eligible for the program, as landlords are required by law to provide and maintain working smoke alarms.

As cold weather settles across the area, Park Forest fire officials are reminding residents to take precautions before turning on their furnaces for the first time this season.

Park Forest Fire Chief Mark Cotrano said homeowners should have their heating systems inspected and cleaned by a qualified professional to ensure they’re operating safely and efficiently.

“After sitting idle all summer, your furnace could have dust buildup or mechanical issues that aren’t immediately noticeable,” Cotrano said. “A professional inspection can help prevent problems like carbon monoxide leaks or even fires once you turn on the heat.”

Cotrano said residents should also check and replace furnace filters to improve air quality and system performance. “A dirty filter can cause your furnace to work harder than it needs to, wasting energy and potentially leading to overheating,” Cotrano said.

For those using space heaters, Cotrano emphasized the importance of keeping them at least three feet away from anything that can burn, including curtains, bedding, and other flammable materials. He also urged residents to never leave a space heater unattended or plugged in while sleeping.

“Space heaters are one of the leading causes of home heating fires,” Cotrano said. “If you use one, make sure it has an automatic shut-off feature and is placed on a flat, stable surface.”

This week, the Park Forest Fire Department is also conducting a community outreach blitz to install smoke detectors in local homes. Firefighters are going door-to-door to make sure residents have working alarms and understand how to test them regularly.

“Working smoke detectors save lives,” Cotrano said. “They give you those crucial extra seconds to escape if there’s a fire. We want to make sure every home in Park Forest is protected before the winter heating season really sets in.”

After two recent electrical fires in Park Forest — including one deadly incident in recent months — local fire officials are stressing the importance of home fire safety and prevention.

“Electrical fires can happen in an instant,” said Deputy Chief Taylor Bordewyk of the Park Forest Fire Department. “Simple steps like checking cords for damage, avoiding overloaded outlets, and making sure smoke alarms are working can save lives.”

The reminder comes as the Park Forest Fire Department joins hundreds of fire agencies across Illinois for the second annual Be Alarmed! Smoke Alarm Installation Statewide Blitz, taking place Oct. 19–25 during National Fire Prevention Month.

Organized by the Illinois Fire Service, Camp I Am Me, the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal, and the Illinois Community Risk Reduction Coalition Task Force, the campaign aims to ensure more homes have working smoke alarms while educating residents about preventing fires before they start.

“This isn’t just about putting a device on your ceiling,” Bordewyk said. “It’s about making sure families understand how critical those extra seconds of warning are. A fire can double in size every 30 seconds — that early alert can be the difference between escaping safely or facing disaster.”

• Test smoke alarms monthly and replace batteries twice a year.
• Replace smoke alarms every 10 years.
• Avoid overloading outlets or using damaged cords.
• Keep space heaters at least three feet from anything flammable.

The Village of Park Forest welcomed Firefighter/Paramedic Daniel Meier to the Park Forest Fire Department during a swearing-in ceremony at Monday night’s Village Board meeting at Village Hall.

Meier, 23, took the oath of office administered by Village Clerk Sheila McGann as family, friends, and members of the fire department looked on. His wife, Carley, had the honor of pinning his badge during the ceremony.

Fire Chief Mark Cotrano said Meier represents the next generation of firefighters dedicated to protecting and serving the Park Forest community.

“Daniel brings a strong background and enthusiasm for the fire service that fits perfectly with our department’s mission,” Cotrano said. “We’re excited to have him join our team.”

Meier’s journey into public safety began in the fall of 2020 when he enrolled at Olivet Nazarene University, majoring in criminal justice. While pursuing his degree, he earned his EMT license in December 2021 and began working for Elite Ambulance. His interest in firefighting deepened after joining the Bradley Fire Department in July 2022, where he completed the fire academy later that year.

In May 2024, Meier earned his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Olivet Nazarene University while serving with both the Bradley and Crete Fire Departments. He is currently enrolled in the Paramedic program at St. Mary’s Hospital, with graduation expected in November.

The Park Forest Fire Department is preparing a full slate of activities in October to celebrate Fire Prevention Month. These activities include a poster contest for young artists, an open house, and a community-wide smoke alarm installation program.

Fire Prevention Week will be observed from Oct. 5 to 11, during which the department invites local youth to participate in its annual poster contest. This year's theme is “Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home.” Fire department staff will judge the posters, and the winners will be announced during the Fire Prevention Week Open House on Oct. 10. The grand prize winner will receive a new bicycle, enjoy breakfast with firefighters, and get a ride to school on a fire truck. Winning posters will also be showcased on the department’s social media pages.

The open house is scheduled for Oct. 10 from 4:30 to 8 p.m. at the Park Forest Fire Department, located at 156 Indianwood Blvd. Activities from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. will include demonstrations with the department’s safety trailer, station tours, giveaways, hayrides, and opportunities to explore fire trucks. Several community partners will also participate, including the Park Forest Police Department, La Rabida Children’s Hospital, the Park Forest Library, the South Suburban Humane Society, and the Village’s Recreation, Parks, Health, and Sustainability offices. The evening will conclude with a campfire, s’mores, popcorn, and a movie.

Later in the month, the department will take part in the statewide “Be Alarmed!” smoke alarm installation program in partnership with the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office and the nonprofit Camp I Am Me. From Oct. 20-26, firefighters will install 10-year sealed battery smoke alarms in Park Forest homes at no cost.

Deputy Chief Taylor Bordewyk stated that the program aims to protect residents and raise awareness about home fire safety. 

“Smoke alarms are the most effective early warning devices available,” Bordewyk said. “By simply having a working smoke alarm in your home, you can reduce your risk of fire-related fatalities by half.” The department will also provide education on home fire escape planning during the installations.

On Monday night at Village Hall, the room was filled to capacity as four members of the Park Forest Fire Department were promoted during a ceremony that opened the village board meeting. These promotions come in light of recent retirements, including that of longtime Fire Chief Tracy Natyshok, marking a new chapter in the department’s leadership.

Deputy Chief Mark Cotrano was appointed as the Village’s new fire chief. Cotrano began his fire service career in 2003 and joined Park Forest in 2007. Over the years, he has progressed through the ranks, serving as lieutenant, shift commander, and deputy chief. He holds a bachelor’s degree in fire service management from Southern Illinois University, along with numerous officer and specialty certifications. His wife, Katie, pinned his new badge, with their five children present.

Succeeding Cotrano as deputy chief is Taylor Bordewyk, who started with Park Forest in 2007 as a firefighter/paramedic. A former U.S. Army sergeant, Bordewyk has 18 years of service with the department and has earned a bachelor’s degree in Fire Science Management from Columbia Southern University. His wife, Amy, pinned his badge during the ceremony.

Kevin Grove was promoted from lieutenant/paramedic to shift commander/paramedic. Grove began his career in 2006 with Crete Township and has served Park Forest since 2011. He is responsible for coordinating emergency responses, federal fire reporting, and maintaining the department’s radio equipment. His wife, Lindsay, along with their children Emily and Brandon, helped with the pinning of his badge.

Finally, Firefighter/Paramedic Tom Marconi was promoted to lieutenant. Marconi began his career as a paid-on-call firefighter in 2009 and joined the department full-time in 2015. He holds an associate’s degree in Fire Science and currently serves as the training officer for the department’s Gray Cart team. His wife, Alisa, pinned his badge with their children, Eliana and Luca, present.

The ceremony received enthusiastic applause from trustees, staff, and residents as the Village celebrated the new leadership team of the Fire Department.

The Park Forest Fire Department responded to more emergency calls in 2024 than in any other year on record, according to the department’s newly released annual report. 

The report, which covers department operations, staffing, training, and community outreach, was introduced in July by newly appointed Fire Chief Mark Cotrano. It highlights a year marked by high demand and unwavering dedication from fire and emergency personnel. 

“We are proud of the work our department accomplished in 2024,” Cotrano said. “This report demonstrates the professionalism and resilience our firefighters and paramedics bring to the community every single day.” 

Last year, the department responded to 5,189 emergency calls—more than in any previous year. Of these, 3,902 were medical in nature, while 1,287 were fire-related. December was the department's busiest month, with 480 calls, and Mondays proved to be the busiest day of the week. The peak hour for emergency activity was between 5 and 6 p.m. 

In terms of fire responses, the department managed 53 structure fires, nine cooking fires, and three grass fires. They also provided or received mutual or automatic aid on 581 incidents. Notably, the department received no citizen complaints for the third consecutive year. 

Cotrano, who officially took over as fire chief following the retirement of longtime Chief Tracy Natyshok, noted that the report reflects years of leadership and foundational work. “Chief Natyshok laid a strong groundwork for growth, training, and innovation,” Cotrano said. “We’re continuing that momentum.” 

Training was a key focus for 2024, especially for the EMS Division led by EMS Coordinator Bess Vlahakis. Monthly training sessions were held for Park Forest personnel and surrounding agencies, covering various topics such as burn care, cardiac emergencies, and pediatric arrest scenarios. In one session, crews practiced 12-lead EKG techniques and cardiac anatomy using pig hearts. 

The fire department employed 28 full-time staff members and two paid-on-call firefighters. Minimum daily staffing was maintained at six, thanks to a SAFER Grant, though overtime was necessary on 98 occasions due to staffing shortages. 

Operating on a nearly $6.6 million budget, the largest portion—$3.3 million—was allocated to personnel services. Other expenses included insurance, maintenance, equipment, and dispatch services. Although no new grants were awarded in 2024, staff continued to seek external funding opportunities. 

Other highlights from the year included the retirement of Firefighter/Paramedic Edward Wright after 23 years of service and the recognition of Firefighter Cory Murdoch as the 2023 Firefighter of the Year during the department’s February awards ceremony. 

Community outreach remained a core focus, with department staff hosting events during Main Street Nights, Fire Prevention Week, and the Park Forest Farmers Market. The department also achieved strong engagement online, with more than 3,000 Facebook followers and over 34,000 views on a TikTok post. 

Looking ahead to this year, the department received the delivery of a new compact fire engine, designed for tighter spaces such as co-op lots in Park Forest. 

“Our focus is always on readiness, service, and safety,” Cotrano said. “While the numbers indicate record-breaking calls, it’s the people behind the response who truly define this department.”

After more than three decades of dedicated service, Park Forest Fire Department Shift Commander and Paramedic Patrick Hisel is retiring from his position.After living and working much of his life in Park Forest, Hisel will now take on a new role as deputy chief of the Richton Park Fire Department.

Hisel's journey in the fire service began on May 8, 1991. He joined the Paid on Call Division of the Park Forest Fire Department, but then transitioned to a full-time position on Jan. 30, 1995, launching a distinguished career characterized by dedication, mentorship, and professional excellence.

Throughout his tenure, Hisel earned numerous certifications from the Illinois State Fire Marshal, including Advanced Technician Firefighter, Fire Apparatus Engineer, Fire Officer II, Fire Investigator, Fire Inspector, and Vehicle/Machinery Operations. He also maintained licensure as an EMT-Paramedic.

In 2015, Hisel was named Firefighter/Paramedic of the Year, recognizing his commitment to both the department and the residents of Park Forest. In addition to his firefighting and paramedic responsibilities, he served as the Village’s emergency management coordinator and was a long-time member of the Park Forest Firefighter’s Association—IAFF Local 1263—spending 28 years on the union board.

Born and raised in Park Forest, Hisel graduated from Rich East High School in 1990. Known for his loyalty to his hometown, the resolution honoring his retirement mentions that he "bleeds green and gold," a reference to his school colors and community pride.

"Pat’s leadership, dedication, and mentorship have left a lasting mark on this department," said Deputy Fire Chief Mark Cotrano. "He’s been more than just a colleague—he’s a true friend to many of us."

The Village board and staff expressed their deepest appreciation for Hisel’s years of service and extended their best wishes for a happy, healthy retirement filled with family, friends, and new pursuits.

Cotrano said Hisel’s departure marks the end of a significant era for the Park Forest Fire Department, but his legacy will continue to inspire the next generation of public safety professionals.

Fire Chief Tracy Natyshok, a dedicated public servant and cornerstone of the Park Forest Fire Department, has officially retired after 28 years of service to the community. 

Natyshok began his career with the department on July 28, 1997, and steadily advanced through the ranks due to his technical expertise, strong leadership, and unwavering commitment to public safety. He served as fire chief for nearly eight years, overseeing several key initiatives strengthening the department and its connections with the community.

Under Natyshok's leadership, the department modernized its fleet and equipment, expanded training programs, secured essential grants, and redefined community outreach efforts. His guidance during the COVID-19 pandemic was particularly praised, as it ensured that emergency services continued to operate safely and effectively amid the crisis.

Deputy Fire Chief Mark Cotrano commended Natyshok's legacy.

"Chief Natyshok was a mentor, a teacher, and above all, a servant leader," Cotrano said. "His impact on this department is immeasurable. He always put the team and community first. We're going to miss his calm presence and visionary thinking."

In addition to Natyshok's administrative achievements, he's remembered as a role model among firefighters and a staunch supporter of the Park Forest Firefighters Association Local 1263. He was widely admired across various village departments.

With his retirement, Natyshok plans to continue teaching with the Illinois Fire Service Institute and to spend more time traveling with his wife, Lorie, and their children, Nate and Taylor. 

The Village board and staff formally recognized his retirement earlier this week with a resolution expressing their deepest gratitude and wishing him a happy, healthy retirement.

Natyshok's last day is Monday, July 28, 28 years after joining the department.

The Park Forest Fire Department is urging residents to prioritize electrical safety as emergency calls reach record levels, and electrical-related fires continue to pose serious risks.

Deputy Chief Mark Cotrano reported an increase in fires caused by issues such as overloaded outlets, faulty wiring, and damaged appliances.

While these incidents are not the leading cause of fires, they remain a significant concern, especially because they often begin out of sight—inside walls or ceilings—and can smolder unnoticed before suddenly erupting.

“These types of fires are particularly dangerous because the warning signs may not be visible until it’s too late,” said Cotrano. “Many of the electrical fires we respond to are entirely preventable.”

This warning comes as the department announced a record-breaking 5,189 emergency calls in 2024, the highest volume in its history. Of those calls, 1,287 were fire-related, which included 53 structure fires and nine cooking fires. The remainder involved hazardous conditions, service calls, and good intention responses.

Cotrano highlighted the importance of fire prevention at home due to the increasing demand for services.

“Simple actions, such as avoiding overloaded outlets, unplugging appliances when not in use, and replacing frayed cords can make a significant difference,” Cotrano said.

Cotrano also recommends that residents have older homes inspected by a licensed electrician, particularly if they notice flickering lights, frequent circuit breaker trips, or outlets that feel warm to the touch.

While the department continues to invest in training, equipment, and community outreach, Cotrano stressed that public vigilance is essential in preventing avoidable emergencies.

“Our goal is always zero electrical fires,” Cotrano said. “We’re encouraging residents to take proactive measures so we can focus more on prevention and less on responding to tragedies that could have been avoided.”

Earlier this year, Park Forest native Elisabeth "Bess" Vlahakis was promoted to lieutenant, making her the second female lieutenant in the history of the Park Forest Fire Department.

Even before her promotion, Deputy Fire Chief Mark Cotrano noted that Vlahakis had been a trailblazer in the department since she joined in September 2016. 

"Every fire department has standout individuals who quietly shape the future of emergency services through hard work, innovation, and dedication," Cotrano said. "For our department, Bess is one of those exceptional people. Her impact on our EMS operations has been nothing short of transformative, making her a key player in our continued progress and readiness."

In addition to her role as lieutenant, Vlahakis also serves as the EMS coordinator. Cotrano explained that although she has held this official title for about two years, her influence has been felt much longer. Vlahakis has laid the groundwork for much of the department's current EMS programming by working off-shift hours, using spare time during her regular shifts, and putting in countless hours behind the scenes.

"Her commitment to building a stronger, more knowledgeable EMS team is evident—and it’s paying off," Cotrano said. "One of Bess's major accomplishments has been the development of a structured and ongoing paramedic continuing education program. This monthly training series, typically held during the fourth week of the month, focuses on challenging topics often overlooked in traditional EMS training."

Cotrano explained that the trainings typically cover low-frequency, high-risk events requiring sharp clinical judgment and preparedness. Vlahakis ensures the training remains current by inviting specialists and experts from various fields. For instance, the upcoming June training session will feature a legal expert leading a discussion on narrative report writing. Cotrano highlighted that accurate and comprehensive documentation is critical for quality EMS care and can have significant implications for legal and medical outcomes. By addressing this vital yet often neglected skill, Vlahakis demonstrates her ability to identify critical needs and tackle them head-on.

Vlahakis's sessions extend beyond the Park Forest Fire Department. What began as a department-focused initiative has evolved into an area-wide training platform, inviting participation from fire departments in surrounding communities. Cotrano noted that this regional collaboration reflects the longstanding practices of Park Forest in fire services and has enhanced the EMS training reputation of the fire department across the area.  Many of the departments that participate in the monthly EMS trainings are those that would be called upon to assist Park Forest during times of a high volume of calls or a larger-scale incident.  

Additionally, Vlahakis oversees the department’s CPR certification and recertification program, held every other month and available to both department personnel and the general public. The sessions are listed on the Village's website.

"Bess manages the entire process—from maintaining a qualified instructor pool to ensuring seamless scheduling and delivery," Cotrano stated. "She is also responsible for overseeing the village's inventory of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs). Two years ago, thanks in part to a grant from ComEd, Bess spearheaded the effort to upgrade our entire AED platform."

Cotrano explained that the new system includes enhanced monitoring capabilities, such as real-time usage alerts when a shock is delivered. This technology upgrade not only improves patient outcomes but also keeps the department at the cutting edge of lifesaving tools.

Cotrano expressed his gratitude for Vlahakis's contributions to the Park Forest Fire Department. 

"What makes Bess invaluable isn’t just her work ethic—she is well-known for her tireless energy and determination," Cotrano said. "It’s also her vision—her ability to see where the EMS program currently stands and where it needs to be in one, five, or ten years. She's forward-thinking and continues to leave a lasting impact on the department."

The Park Forest Fire Department offers a cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) class on the third Saturday of every month, inviting residents to acquire this essential life-saving skill that can make a critical difference in emergencies.

On May 17 at 9 a.m., the fire department will host a Basic Life Support (BLS) course at the firehouse located at 156 Indianwood Blvd. This course is designed to teach participants how to effectively perform CPR, properly use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), and provide essential first aid to individuals of all ages, from infants to seniors.

Deputy Fire Chief Mark Cotrano said that while the course is specifically tailored for emergency medical services (EMS) personnel and healthcare professionals such as physician assistants, doctors, dentists, and nurses—who require certification to demonstrate their proficiency in CPR—the knowledge gained is equally important for everyday citizens.

"Learning these skills can empower community members to respond effectively in emergency situations, potentially saving lives before professional help arrives," Cotrano said. "So, that's why we're promoting the class on social media and the Village's website, in hopes that residents would participate."

Cotrano explained that cardiac arrest is one of the leading causes of death. Each year, more than 350,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur in the United States. He stated that when someone experiences a cardiac arrest, their chances of survival depend on receiving CPR from a bystander immediately.

Unfortunately, almost 90 percent of individuals who suffer from out-of-hospital cardiac arrests do not survive. Cotrano stated that performing CPR, particularly within the first few minutes of a cardiac arrest, can double or even triple a person's chances of survival.

The Park Forest Fire Department held a swearing-in ceremony during Monday evening's board meeting. During this event, one member was promoted, and another was officially welcomed to the department.

Elisabeth "Bess" Vlahakis, a native of Park Forest, has been serving as the department's emergency medical services (EMS) coordinator. She has now been promoted to lieutenant, making her the second female lieutenant in the department's history, following Lieutenant Michelle Paradise, who became the first in 2023.

Vlahakis joined the Park Forest Fire Department in 2016, but her career in the fire service began in 2003. She graduated as an EMT-B, became a firefighter in 2007, and earned her paramedic certification in 2009. Prior to joining her hometown's department, she worked for several other fire departments in the area.

Over the past two decades, Vlahakis has obtained 32 fire service certifications, including various technical rescue certifications. She is an active Combined Agency Response Team member and serves as a rescue specialist with the Illinois Task Force 1 Team.

Vlahakis is passionate about EMS. She has developed EMS training programs to benefit firefighters and paramedics from the Park Forest Fire Department and the surrounding departments that assist them. Additionally, for 13 years, she has been an instructor with the Prairie State Fire and EMS Academies, helping to train the next generation of firefighters, EMTs, and paramedics.

The Park Forest Fire Department also welcomed Jacob Reece to its family during Monday night's Board meeting. The 24-year-old is a native of the southland and comes from a family of firefighters. His grandfather was a firefighter in Lansing, and his father is a Hazel Crest Fire Department lieutenant.

Reece began his fire service career with the Beecher Fire Protection District, where he completed the fire academy in 2021. Recently, he also obtained his paramedic certification. All Park Forest Fire Department members serve as both firefighters and paramedics.

Reece's grandfather, Don Reece Sr., pinned his badge on him to cement the occasion. 

The Park Forest Fire Department urges parents to utilize the new scheduling tool available on the Village's website when participating in the Car Seat Assistance Program.

For more than a decade, the department has been dedicated to ensuring the safety of children during travel by providing essential assistance in properly installing car seats. Previously, parents could simply arrive at the fire department for help, but this approach often resulted in long wait times or uncertainty about staff availability. 

To enhance the experience, Deputy Chief Mark Cotrano announced the implementation of the scheduling tool. This feature allows parents to book a convenient appointment, ensuring that trained personnel are on hand to provide guidance and support during installation. 

"By streamlining this service, we aim to provide more reliable assistance and enhance overall child safety on the roads," said Cotrano. "With this scheduling tool, we can prepare adequately and ensure we have enough staff on hand to manage our daily operations and assist residents using this program."

Currently, the schedule is open for April. Appointments are available between 8 a.m. and noon on Tuesday, April 1, Wednesday, April 9, and Thursday, April 17. In addition to installing car seats, Cotrano mentioned that they educate parents and provide them with resources to help them understand what type of car seat to buy as their child grows.

"This isn't just an installation service – it's an educational opportunity," Cotrano said. "Our technicians will guide you through the process so you can confidently install your child's car seat independently."

Cotrano emphasized that correctly installing a car seat is a matter of life and death. He pointed out that statistics show motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death and disability among children ages 1 to 13. Sixty-nine percent (69%) of fatalities and severe injuries could be prevented with the proper use and installation of child car seats.

During the board meeting on Monday night at VillageHall, the Park Forest Fire Department conducted a swearing-in ceremony for Kyle Haemker, its newest firefighter and paramedic.

Haemker’s dedication to fire service began in 2004, when he joined the Crete Fire Department as an explorer, a program designed to teach young individuals about firefighting and emergency services. In 2008, he progressed in his career by joining the Crete Township Fire Protection District, where he actively served his community for 15 years until 2023. 

During this time, Haemker said he gained invaluable experience and training, which paved the way for his subsequent roles. From 2021 to 2024, Haemker was employed as a full-time firefighter with the Bradley Fire Department, further honing his skills in emergency response and patient care. He also had a brief tenure with the Lemont Fire Protection District, where he expanded his expertise before ultimately being hired by the Park Forest Fire Department. 

Following the oath of office, Haemker’s wife, Jessica, pinned his badge onto his uniform. Village Manager Tom Mick, alongside the Park Forest Board of Trustees,  welcomed Haemker and his family to the Village of Park Forest, emphasizing the importance of community support for first responders. 

Mick took a moment to highlight the strong backing that first responders received during the pandemic, based on insights gathered from a comprehensive community-wide survey. This feedback, he noted, underscores the vital relationship between public safety officials and the residents they serve.

"The approval rating in that community survey... on a scale from 0 to 100 was 98.1%," Mick said. "Kyle, you're coming to an exemplary department, and I wish you the best in your career."

The Park Forest Fire Department encourages residents to exercise caution when using space heaters this weekend, as the weather is expected to be the coldest of the season.

Deputy Fire Chief Mark Cotrano pointed out that January has been below normal temperatures, and even colder air is expected from Sunday through Wednesday. With forecasters predicting subzero temperatures for several days, many people may turn to portable space heaters for warmth.

"Accidents, particularly fires, can be prevented with just a little bit of caution," Cotrano emphasized. "It is crucial to plug space heaters directly into a wall outlet and never use a surge protector."

Extension cords and surge protectors can overload the circuits, increasing the fire risk. Cotrano reiterated that the best approach is to follow the manufacturer's instructions and connect the heater directly to a wall outlet.

Cotrano also mentioned that the risk of fire increases significantly during cold weather, mainly due to the rise in the use of heating appliances such as space heaters, fireplaces, and ovens. These devices can malfunction or be misused, leading to a higher incidence of house fires in winter. 

According to the 2023 Park Forest Fire Department Annual Report, the department responded to 1,148 fire calls, of which 99 were actual fires. Cotrano advised that conducting a safety checklist before using a space heater can potentially save lives.

"Make sure to operate the space heater on a flat, stable surface and maintain a clearance of about three feet from any combustible materials while it is in use," Cotrano stated. "We also want to remind everyone to be cautious if young children or pets are around. Ensure they stay at a safe distance to avoid injuries or knocking the heater over accidentally."

Cotrano cautioned that some individuals might use their ovens as a source of warmth during the anticipated cold snap. He strongly advised against this practice, as it poses significant safety risks, regardless of whether the oven is gas or electric. 

Gas ovens can emit carbon monoxide, a hazardous gas that is both colorless and odorless, making it virtually undetectable without proper equipment. This risk is particularly heightened if the oven door is left open, as inadequate ventilation can lead to a dangerous buildup of carbon monoxide in the home, putting residents at severe risk of poisoning.

On the other hand, while electric ovens do not directly produce carbon monoxide, they still pose hazards if used inappropriately for heating purposes. Improper ventilation in closed spaces can accumulate other harmful gases, which can negatively affect indoor air quality and pose health risks to occupants.

Cotrano reminded residents that the Park Forest Police Station, located at 200 Lakewood Boulevard, serves as a warming center and is open 24 hours a day

After 23 years of service to the community, Firefighter/Paramedic Ed Wright will retire from the department this week.  

Wright began his career in the fire service in 1992 as a member of the Park Forest Fire Department's Paid On-Call Division. He then became a full-time paramedic with the Chicago Fire Department and later returned to Park Forest as a firefighter/paramedic in 2001. 

Wright has served numerous years as the department's unofficial senior engineer, keeping the department's equipment and apparatus ready for response. He became known as an advisor, counselor, and trusted confidant to all ranks and seniority levels at the Park Forest Fire Department. 

"Ed was the senior member of his shift and was the shift "Barn Boss," said Park Forest Fire Chief Tracy Natyshok. "This informal position is given to a member respected by all members on their shift. The Barn Boss is the go-to person who ensures everyone is trained up, squared away, and ready to run. Ed fulfilled this role on his shift and has helped many junior members advance in their careers."

Throughout his career with the Park Forest Fire Department, Wright obtained numerous Illinois State Fire Marshal certifications, including Firefighter II, Fire Apparatus Engineer, Hazardous Materials Operations, and Vehicle/Machinery Operations. In 2010, Wright was named Park Forest Firefighter/Paramedic of the Year for his dedication and service to the department and the public. 

 "Ed has served the citizens of Park Forest with great pride and honor," Natyshok said. "He has undoubtedly made the Park Forest Fire Department better. I am very proud to have served with Ed and have many great memories of the calls we have been on together. His service reflects his skills, deep compassion, and professionalism. We are incredibly grateful for his contributions and the legacy he leaves behind."

Wright will be recognized Monday night by the Park Forest board of trustees. His final shift is set for Nov. 24. 

Over the weekend, residents of Park Forest took the opportunity to set their clocks back an hour in observance of daylight savings time. This change in time also serves as a crucial reminder from Park Forest Deputy Fire Chief Mark Cotrano about the importance of home safety, particularly when it comes to smoke detectors.

Cotrano emphasizes that this transition is the perfect occasion to assess the functionality of smoke detectors throughout your home. He strongly recommends not only testing each smoke alarm but also replacing the batteries if they show any signs of weakness or if it has been several months since the last change. This simple yet vital task can significantly enhance the safety of your living environment.

According to Cotrano, having properly functioning smoke alarms is one of the most effective measures homeowners can take to prevent tragic outcomes from house fires. He urges everyone to take this small step, which has the potential to save lives and protect properties from the devastation of fire. Ensuring that your smoke detectors are operational could be a lifesaving decision in emergency situations.

"Smoke alarms are the most important life safety device available," Cotrano stated. "If there is smoke or a fire in another part of the house, or if it occurs while you're sleeping, they can potentially save your life."

According to a 2024 report by the National Fire Protection Association, the death rate per 1,000 home structure fires is nearly 60% lower in homes with working smoke alarms compared to those without alarms or with malfunctioning ones.

Cotrano emphasized that although the weather in November is still mild, cold temperatures will eventually arrive, making a working smoke alarm essential.

"During the winter months, we typically see an increase in fires," Cotrano explained. "Many of these incidents occur due to open space heaters, using burners on the stove, and similar causes. It's important to maintain a buffer of four to five feet around heating devices and to keep towels, curtains, and other flammable materials away from them, as these can lead to fires."

The Park Forest Fire Department has issued a warning for residents concerning an elevated risk of fire due to anticipated drought-like conditions and strong winds in the coming week. 

Meteorological forecasts indicate that temperatures are expected to reach nearly 80 degrees Fahrenheit on both Tuesday and Wednesday. When these near-record high temperatures are coupled with gusty winds, low humidity levels, and dry grass, conditions become highly conducive to the ignition and spread of grass fires. 

Deputy Fire Chief Mark Cotrano emphasizes the seriousness of this situation, urging residents to refrain from burning leaves, as this practice is not only dangerous under the current conditions but is also prohibited by the Village's ordinance. He stresses that community vigilance is crucial in helping to prevent potentially devastating fires during this high-risk period.

"Our grounds are dry, and the fire risk is high," Cotrano said. "So, I'm asking residents to use caution when they're using machinery and chainsaws that generate heat and sparks could ignite fires. Also, asking people to be careful with discarded matches or cigarettes."

Cotrano pointed out that during elevated fire conditions, even a small spark can ignite a dangerous and potentially deadly fire. He emphasized that the Park Forest Fire Department wants residents to be aware of this risk, especially on Tuesday and Wednesday, when conditions will be the most severe in terms of fire danger.

Meteorologists are forecasting rain to arrive by midweek, which could disrupt Halloween plans for trick-or-treaters this Thursday. Temperatures are expected to drop from 81 degrees on Wednesday to 56 degrees by Friday. The average high temperature for Park Forest in late October is 55 degrees.

The Park Forest Fire Department reminds residents to perform safety checks before turning on their heat.

Early morning temperatures across the Village have dipped as low as the mid-30s this week, prompting frost and freeze warnings around Chicagoland. As fall continues and winter is on the horizon, Park Forest Deputy Fire Chief Mark Cotrano said residents should do a few things prior to turning the heat on to prevent a possible fire.

"Be sure to check your air filters," Cotrano said. Clean around the furnace or heat pump and ensure carbon monoxide detectors are working. Also, it's a good time to make sure your fire detectors are working."

Cotrano said turning on your heat without changing a very dirty air filter can potentially cause a fire. A clogged filter restricts airflow, causing the furnace to overheat and, in extreme cases, ignite nearby materials. He added that this is considered a serious safety concern, and it's important to change your air filter regularly to prevent this risk.

When you turn on the heat, it's common to notice a burning smell the first time the furnace is fired up. If you do, it's most likely just dust that's accumulated while the furnace wasn't in use.

For those who use space heaters, Cotrano warned against using a power strip or extension cord because most aren't designed to handle the high electrical current a space heater draws. Overheating and potential fire hazards can result from overloading the power strip or extension cord. He said to always plug a space heater directly into a wall outlet.

Additionally, Cotrano said to leave at least three feet of space between your space heater and anything that can burn, including furniture, clothing, bedding, and curtains. He said these heaters shouldn’t be left on overnight, as that too can present a fire risk.

"Last week was Fire Prevention Week," Cotrano said. "Since our open house, the weather turned cold overnight. So, we want to remind residents to take these extra steps to keep themselves and their loved ones safe."

The Park Forest Fire Department reminds residents to check their HVAC systems to ensure they are working correctly. 

With summer on the horizon and people starting to use their air conditioners, the fire department warns faulty HVAC systems can create hazardous problems, including fires. 

Deputy Fire Chief Mark Cotrano said people should understand the telltale signs of a malfunctioning air conditioner system. It can help homeowners and renters realize the importance of regular maintenance to help avoid dangerous HVAC problems.

It's essential to ensure your HVAC is serviced," Cotrano said. “Some common causes of HVAC problems include flammable materials stored too close to the unit, plants obstructing the airflow, and clutter placed too close to the unit.”

Cotrano said being proactive about regularly inspecting your HVAC system is the key to preventing air conditioner problems. He added though the unit is a well-crafted machine, it's still subject to the unpredictable nature of the outdoors. That's why, outside of regularly scheduled maintenance by experienced professionals, it's important to inspect its condition as best you can on your own.

"Be sure to check for damage to the unit, keep your unit's ducts clean, and keep the area around your unit clutter-free," Cotrano said. "Eliminating all debris and objects from within and around your unit is essential in preventing it from malfunctioning or catching on fire."

Cotrano added that a lack of air conditioner maintenance could lead to an HVAC fire or potentially a hazardous material release due to dirt obstructing airflow, electrical systems that need repair, and more. He said scheduling bi-annual air conditioner inspections with a trusted HVAC company is crucial.

The Village of Park Forest's board meeting at Village Hall on Monday night was filled to capacity. During an oath of office ceremony, the organization introduced two new police officers and a firefighter/paramedic and recognized the promotion of two firefighters/paramedics.

Officers Tashianna Holt and Andrew Schwartz are the newest members of the Park Forest Police Department. Holt, a Chicago native, graduated from Kennedy King College with an associate's degree in criminal justice. She continued her education at Chicago State University and earned her bachelor's degree in criminal justice. 

A mother of three who enjoys basketball and football, Holt loves spending time with her family and watching sports. Before joining the Park Forest Police Department, she worked as an officer for two years with the Cary Police Department.

As mentioned, Schwartz also joined the Park Forest Police Department. He's a Frankfort native who attended Providence Catholic High School before receiving a bachelor of science in history and social sciences teaching from Illinois State University. 

Schwartz's background includes teaching in several school districts and working in various middle schools. He transitioned into law enforcement, with over 13 years of experience. Schwartz is a certified traffic crash reconstructionist through Northwestern University and has led the investigation of over 500 automobile crashes, including nearly 100 serious personal injury or fatal crashes. When he's not protecting and serving, he's an avid golfer who loves spending time with his family and friends.

The Park Forest Fire Department welcomed Edward Bush to the organization and promoted James Baum and Tyler Triemstra. Bush comes to the department from the Richton Park Fire Department. However, his journey started when he was a manager at Culver's. There, he learned how much he enjoyed helping others and grew interested in the fire service.

Bush began his career in the fire service with the Phoenix (IL) Fire Department through an in-house program. He earned his basic certification as a firefighter. He then went on to EMT school, which allowed him to help people while working at Elite Ambulance Service for the next three years. Bush completed paramedic school in August 2022 and secured a job with Bud's Ambulance Service to continue improving and perfecting his skills. 

Triemstra, a native of Beecher, Illinois, graduated from Beecher High School and joined the fire department in his hometown in 2008. He also worked with the New Lenox Fire District before being hired full-time as a firefighter/paramedic with the Park Forest Fire Department in 2011. He doubles as the Park Forest Firefighters' Pension Board president and serves the department's union board. His hard work has promoted him to shift commander/paramedic.

Baum also joined the Park Forest Fire Department in 2011. He's been in the area for several years and worked in several local fire departments before joining the PFFD. He's obtained 28 state fire marshal certifications, including peer fitness instructor, watercraft technician, fire inspector, and fire investigator. Baum is also an instructor for the Prairie State College Fire Academy and an active Combined Agency Response Team member.

As the summer season winds down and the fall approaches, Park Forest Deputy Fire Chief Mark Cotrano is reminding residents to exercise caution while using their grills. 

Cotrano said with the warm weather still lingering, many people will continue to enjoy outdoor grilling, but it's important to prioritize safety.

"July was the peak month for grill fires, followed by June, May, and August, based on 2017-2021 annual averages, according to the National Fire Protection Association," Cotrano said. "These fires could be avoided if people take the necessary precautions."

Cotrano emphasized the importance of never leaving your grill unattended, especially when children or pets are around. He stressed the need to keep an eye on your grill and have a fire extinguisher nearby that you know how to use. Cotrano also recommended maintaining a three-foot safe zone around your grill to ensure the safety of children and pets from burns, hot surfaces, or tipping.

In terms of cleaning your grill, Cotrano advised cleaning the grill and the tray below it after each use to remove grease that can lead to fire and cause flare-ups and smoke. You can turn the grill on high for 10–15 minutes to burn off grease or scrape residue from the grates. Once the coals have cooled, they should be placed in a metal can with a lid.

"While these may seem like common-sense techniques, a lot of times people become complacent, and accidents happen," Cotrano said. "So it is important for people to take their time and keep safety at the forefront before lighting up the grill."

With temperatures rising as summer approaches, the Park Forest Fire Department is sounding the alarm about the dangers of leaving children unattended in hot cars.

Illinois ranks 17 among U.S. states with the highest number of child deaths related to hot car incidents between 1990 and 2023, according to a report by Kids and Car Safety, an advocacy group dedicated to tracking such incidents.

Park Forest Deputy Fire Chief Mark Cotrano said it is essential to take proactive measures to prevent these deaths, adding that it starts with education.

 "A car can become dangerously hot in as little as 10 minutes, especially on a hot day," Cotrano said. "For example, on an 80-degree day, the inside of a car can reach 109 degrees after 20 minutes."

Cotrano said even though children are at high risk of dying inside a hot car, they aren't the only people at significant risk. Older people, people with disabilities, and even pets could fall victim to being left inside a car, and it doesn't take long for someone to feel the devastating effects of being inside.

Cotrano added there are things parents can do to ensure they don't forget their children in the car.

"One thing you can do to make sure you don't leave anyone behind is by putting something you'll need in the back seat," Cotrano said. "After loading your family into the car, place an object you'll need on arrival in the back — perhaps your wallet, purse, or cell phone. This method will guarantee a thorough car check after parking."

Firefighter/Paramedic Cory Murdoch of the Park Forest Fire Department is the recipient of the 2023 Firefighter of the Year Award.

The annual award is given to someone who exemplifies the characteristics of a firefighter with an outstanding record of fire service achievements. Murdoch, a 23-year department veteran, was formally recognized at Freedom Hall during the annual Park Forest Fire Department awards ceremony late last month.

Park Forest Fire Chief Tracy Natyshok credits Murdoch for his leadership skills and always being dependable.

"Cory takes great pride in the work he does. Just like a Marine, he can be counted on to carry out whatever task is given to him, big or small," Natyshok said. "Cory is usually the first one to work in the morning. As the senior engineer of his shift, Cory likes to ensure his rig is completely ready for his shift and that he can safely get the crew to calls and provides them with water for the fire, hoses, tools, ladders, or whatever equipment they may need to operate safely and that it is ready."

Natyshok said that the characteristics of a good firefighter are not restricted to simply heroic actions but encompass all aspects of a productive, dedicated, and professional service at all levels. Murdoch, who's been with the Park Forest Fire Department since 2001, exemplified that most in 2023, Natyshok said.

Park Forest Firefighters Local 1263 calls on residents to join them for their Disco Party Trivia fundraising event on Feb. 24., at Dining on the Green. 

This year, the union is raising money to support their internship program and Project Fire Buddies, a non-profit organization supporting critically ill children. 

The fundraiser crosses disco and trivia, and people are encouraged to dress like the '70s. Those interested can pay $120 per team of up to eight people. The price per person for smaller groups is $20. The winning team will receive $500, and $100 will go to the person with the best disco outfit. 

People can bring their drinks and a designated driver. Food is included with your table purchase, but participants can bring snacks, too. 

The last day to reserve a spot is next Wednesday, Feb. 21., or until spots are filled.

When you deck the halls this holiday season, the Park Forest Fire Department reminds residents to take precautions to protect their families and keep fire safety at the forefront.

Deputy Fire Chief Mark Cotrano said residents can take simple steps to prevent a disaster.

"According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPSA), half of all Christmas tree fires are caused by an electrical problem or a heat source too close to the tree," Cotrano said. "Residents should be mindful to check surge protectors and be sure not to overload them."

Cotrano noted it is vital to keep space heaters and other heating devices far away from the tree, as they are easily combustible. He added that you can prevent these accidents by taking proper safety measures when purchasing, setting up, decorating, and disposing of (or storing) your tree.

"When purchasing an artificial tree, look for the label 'fire-retardant,'' Cotrano said. "Although this label does not mean the tree will not catch fire, it indicates that it will resist burning and extinguish quickly." 

Cotrano continued, "When purchasing a live tree, check for freshness. Check if the needles are green and hard to pull from the branches. Also, see if the needles bend between your fingers without breaking."

Below are more tips on ways to be proactive and keep your home safe during the holiday season.

Holiday Decorating:

• Be careful with holiday decorations. Choose UL certified decorations that are flame resistant or flame retardant.
• Keep lit candles at least 12 inches away from decorations and other things that can burn.
• Some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use, but not both.
• Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections.
• Read manufacturer’s instructions for number of light strands to connect.
• Use clips, not nails, to hang lights so the cords do not get damaged.
• Keep decorations away from windows and doors that could block exits.

Christmas Tree Safety:

• Choose a tree with fresh, green needles that do not fall off when touched.
• Before placing the tree in the stand, cut 2 inches from the base of the trunk.
• Make sure the tree is at least three feet away from any heat source, such as fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents or lights.
• Make sure the tree is not blocking an exit.
• Add water to the tree stand. Be sure to add water daily.
• Use lights that are listed by a qualified testing laboratory. Some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use.
• Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections. Read manufacturer’s instructions for number of light strands to connect.
• Never use lit candles to decorate the tree.
• Always turn off Christmas tree lights before leaving home or going to bed.

With the end of daylight savings time coming on Nov. 5, the Park Forest Fire Department is reminding residents to check their smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms and change the batteries when they change their clocks.

This Sunday, clocks will "fall" back an hour as the Village returns to standard time. Deputy Fire Chief Mark Cotrano said this is a great time to remember to check and change the batteries in smoke and CO alarms.

“'Change Your Clocks, Change Your Batteries,'” is a slogan created by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to assist residents in remembering to change their smoke detectors batteries," Cotrano said. "Having a working smoke detector is a very important part in early detection during a fire."

According to NFPA, an average of 1,450 fire deaths occur yearly in homes with missing or non-functioning alarms. Cotrano said working smoke detectors save lives.

"We recommend changing your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detector batteries twice a year, and for smoke detectors that are newer 10 year sealed batteries, we recommend testing them on a monthly basis," Cotrano said. 

Cotrano reiterated it's essential for all homes and apartments to have smoke alarms. Additionally, he said it is strongly recommended people also have CO alarms. He said homes with equipment like furnaces, stoves, generators, and gas water heaters must install carbon monoxide detectors to help prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.

If you're unsure when you should replace your batteries, Cotrano said a good indicator is when the alarm makes a chirping sound. He said that's usually a warning sign it is time to change the batteries in both alarms.

While fall is known for enjoying the cool crisp air, getting cozy, and celebrating holidays, the Park Forest Fire Department often sees it as a time to brush up on fire safety.

On Friday, Oct. 13, from 4:30 to 8 p.m., the Park Forest Fire Department will kick off Fire Prevention Week with its 2023 Open House, hosted at the   Park Forest Fire Department, 156 Indianwood Blvd.

The fire department hosts several family-friendly themes at the open house, including giveaways, food, bounce houses, and more. Additionally, residents will see fire prevention demonstrations and can tour the fire station. 

For this year’s Fire Prevention Week, it was announced by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) that the theme for 2023 was cooking safety and all the important actions that people should take while in the kitchen in order to prevent burns and house fires.

According to NFPA, cooking is the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries in the US. Unattended cooking is the leading cause of cooking fires and deaths. 

These cooking-related home fires often peaked during Thanksgiving and Christmas, with ranges or cooktops being involved in 61% of reported home cooking fires, 87% of cooking fire deaths, and 78% of cooking fire injuries. Also, homes with electric ranges have a higher risk of cooking fires than those with gas ranges.

“Year after year, cooking remains the leading cause of home fires by far, accounting for half (49%) of all U.S. home fires,” Lorraine Carli, vice president of outreach and advocacy at NFPA said in a press release. 

“These numbers tell us that there is still much work to do when it comes to better educating the public about ways to stay safe when cooking.”

The Department of Recreation, Parks & Community Health starts the month with a trip to the Studebaker Theater to watch "The Color Purple" musical on Sunday, Oct 1. 

For $130, you can travel via a luxury coach bus departing from Village Hall to enjoy the musical from the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Alice Walker. Additionally, the group will eat lunch at Time Out Market Chicago. 

That's just one trip the department is hosting in October. On Oct 5., you can join the Dept. of Recreation, Parks, and Community Health at the Jacob Henry Mansion in Joliet to watch "Simply Elton: A Tribute to Legendary Elton John." The event costs $90.

On Oct 7., the Park Forest Sustainability Office is hosting its annual Fall Shredding and Drug Take Back event. From 10 a.m. until noon, people are invited to come to the Village Hall's parking lot - 350 Victory Drive - to drop off prescription drugs or paper.

The Park Forest Fire Department is participating in Fire Prevention Week, which runs from Oct 8-14. The Park Forest Fire Department will also host a pop-up event at Somonauk Park on Oct 11., from 4 to 6 p.m. to promote fire safety during Fire Prevention Week.

The fire department hosts several family-friendly themes at the open house, which is Friday, Oct 13., from 4 30 to 8 p.m., including giveaways, food, bounce houses, and more. Later in the month, on Oct 18., the Senior Citizens Advisory Commission is hosting the Cybersecurity Awareness Seminar in recognition of National Cybersecurity Month. 

Attendees will learn more than just the do's and don'ts online. They'll know how corporations and other data aggregators collect and use people's personal information and how they can mitigate the potential damage.

Also in October, Freedom Hall's fall and winter concert series kicks-off with the first show on Oct 21., "Wonderlove - The Stevie Wonder Experience." To end the month, The Department of Recreation, Parks & Community Health is hosting free walk-up COVID testing at Village Hall on Oct 24., from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. No appointment is needed. Residents are encouraged to get tested for the virus and know their status as the holiday season nears.

Captain Phil Myers is retiring from the Park Forest Fire Department after serving for roughly three decades.

Myers was recognized during Monday night's Board meeting with a retirement resolution honoring his 30 years of service with the department. His last day will be this Friday, July 21.

Myers, whose father was a firefighter and introduced him to the profession, began his fire service journey in 1982 as a Sauk Village Fire Department cadet.

He started his full-time career with the Park Forest Fire Department in 1993.

Myers attended Prairie State College in 1994, earning an associate degree in fire science. He continued his education at Southern Illinois University in 2002 and earned a bachelor's in fire science management.

Over the years, he has obtained numerous Illinois State Fire Marshall certifications and was a Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS 27) hazardous materials rescue team member.

Myers was a team leader of the hazmat team for numerous years before becoming a founding member of a local Technical Rescue Team.

Deputy Fire Chief Mark Cotrano said Myers has left an everlasting impact on the Park Forest Fire Department.

"Myers has had a distinguished career with the Park Forest Fire Department, rising through the ranks from firefighter to lieutenant and finally to captain," Cotrano said. "He was a Prairie State College and Blue Card Command instructor and taught fire science classes throughout the local area. Captain Myers has dramatically impacted our fire department and our local area."

Myers says he has many fond memories of his career in the fire service. He said one of the most impactful things he did was teaching young Park Foresters about fire prevention.

"My most memorable moments with the fire department would have been the opportunities to teach fire prevention to the children of Park Forest." Captain Myers said. "To see the excitement on a child's face the first time they get to touch the big fire truck or to see a firefighter up close with all his gear on will remain with me forever."

Myers added, "And for me, there was no better feeling when a child you just finished talking to about fire safety wants to shake your hand or hug you just because you are a firefighter."

Myers says the last eight years as the fire prevention officer has been the most impactful. He said no other job in the fire department is responsible for helping people before the crisis.

"The biggest impact in fire safety since the smoke detector is residential fire sprinklers," Myers said. "It is the single most effective way of saving lives from fire. And to work in a town that embraced fire safety and was one of the first towns in Illinois to adopt an ordinance requiring residential fire sprinklers makes me very proud."

As Myers looks to close the chapter on his career in the fire service, he urges younger firefighters to always learn something new.

"I encourage everyone that is just starting their career as a firefighter to always strive to be better," Myers said. "Don't pass up on any opportunity to learn something. The fire service has a vast field of specialties. Throughout my career, I took every advantage of attending school and learning a new specialty. During my time I specialized in hazardous materials, fire investigation, technical rescue, and finally, fire prevention."

The Park Forest Fire Department is hosting an open house retirement party from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. to celebrate the career of Myers.

The Park Forest Fire Department promoted Michelle Paradise to Lieutenant, making her the first female lieutenant in the department.

Lieutenant Paradise was one of three firefighters sworn in and promoted during Monday night's Board meeting. Her firefighter career dates back to 2004, when she was a Richton Park Fire Department cadet as a Rich South High School sophomore. Three years later, she was certified as a firefighter II. 

In 2013 Paradise joined the Park Forest Fire Department. Over the years, she has completed an associate degree in fire science and has been recognized for her accomplishments and awards since joining the department.

Park Forest Fire Chief Tracy Natyshok hugged Lt. Paradise after being sworn in at the Board meeting and said she deserved this promotion.

"Being the first to do anything comes with a certain amount of pressure to succeed," said Chief Natyshok. "With that said, I am confident that Lt. Paradise will not only be successful, she will make us a better fire department."

In addition to Lt. Paradise's promotion, Taylor Bordewyk was promoted to shift commander. Bordewyk began his fire service career in 2006 after working in the automotive industry and serving as a mechanic in the United State Army. He joined the Park Forest Fire Department in 2007 and has served in various positions, including the hazmat team and fire investigations.

Mark Cotrano was recognized at the Board Meeting as he was promoted to deputy fire chief. He's been in the fire service since 2003 and joined the Park Forest Fire Department in 2007. He worked his way up through the ranks and was promoted to lieutenant in 2016 and five years later became shift commander in 2021. 

Fireworks are illegal in Illinois, and Village officials remind residents to leave the firework displays to the professionals. Park Forest is in a moderate to severe drought, with an elevated fire risk.

The extreme dryness sweeping the Chicagoland area is making the use of fireworks extremely dangerous.

Park Forest Fire Department Deputy Chief Mark Cotrano said with the growing fire threat, the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) recommends that people use glow sticks or noise makers to enjoy Independence Day.

"Use glow sticks," Cotrano said. "They glow in the dark, are a safe alternative to a sparkler, and are fun for all ages."

Most fireworks are illegal in Illinois, but Contrano said even those that are legal, like sparklers, can cause injury or start a fire.

Cotrano added sparklers could reach temperatures up to 1200 degrees which can cause serious physical harm. The sparks that fly off the sparklers can easily ignite nearby combustible materials, including paper, fabric, and dry grass around the Village.

Cotrano said residents could have an outdoor movie night by setting up a screen and projector, another family-friendly holiday celebration idea.

Contrano reiterated residents should leave the firework show to the professionals and said the Village wants everyone to have a safe holiday.

The Village of Park Forest will host a parade on Tuesday, July 4, at 6 p.m. The parade will begin at the intersection of Main Street and Orchard Drive. The Park Forest Fire Department welcomed a new firefighter-paramedic earlier this week at Monday night's Village Board meeting.

Jonas Campbell was sworn in with his parents, Carl and Christina Campbell, by his side to pin on his badge.

Campbell is no stranger to the south suburbs as he grew up in the area and graduated from Homewood-Flossmoor High School in 2012.

A few years later, Campbell was invited to attend an orientation for the Park Forest Fire Department's volunteer program. The fire department sponsored him, and he graduated from the Prairie State Fire Academy in late 2017. He then began working in a paid on-call capacity in Park Forest.

Campbell completed his emergency medical technician (EMT) in 2018 and completed his paramedic training in 2022. While in school, he maintained a 4.0-grade point average and made the president's list several times.

Two weeks after graduating, Campbell took his national test and passed on the first attempt. Before working in Park Forest, Campbell worked part-time with the Richton Park Fire Department.

When Campbell isn't fulfilling his duties with the Park Forest Fire Department, he's enjoying his various hobbies; cooking, baking, fishing, and restoring a vintage 1971 Chevy Chevelle.

Ambulance calls account for approximately 75% of Park Forest Fire Department (PFFD) 911 calls. So first responders must have the latest equipment to do their jobs. PFFD has rolled out a new state-of-the-art ambulance with the latest technology to help save lives.

Shift commander Neil Grove explained this ambulance's new features would help them do just that.

"This ambulance includes a power assist and power-load cot," Grove said. "The lifting and lowering of the cot with battery assistance allows for safer movement of the patient and limits employee strains and injuries."

Grove added that the ambulance also has a CPR assist device (LUCAS) that allows continuous CPR, freeing paramedics to complete advanced airway, IV, and drug therapy. This tool also enables CPR to be administered while first responders move a patient down a flight of stairs or into an elevator.

Grove said it is paramount for them to have access to the latest tools because it helps the department save lives.

"Simply put, firefighters can effectively and efficiently serve the citizens when our equipment and vehicles are well equipped and reliable, as our vehicles are an extension of our skillset," Grove said. "This vehicle will ensure your firefighters can respond to "all hazard" emergencies and transport residents to the hospital in a safe, state-of-the-art apparatus."

Park Forest Fire Department operates two advanced life support (ALS) ambulances and one ALS-equipped fire engine. The fire department also houses a reserve bariatric capable ambulance that is shared among neighboring communities and obtained through a federal grant.

Grove noted that as an ambulance is replaced, the older unit returns to reserve status. The ambulance was scheduled to be replaced per the replacement schedule as the ambulances receive the most wear and tear of all the apparatus.

Grove said the investment into the new ambulance is all about public safety.

"All PFFD apparatus, including this new ambulance, reflects the service the Fire Department and its staff strives for 24 hours a day, 365 days a year," Grove said. "The ambulance transports the firefighter and paramedics to your location for the emergency, carrying the equipment needed to help you immediately."

Firefighter/Paramedic Joe Spanier of the Park Forest Fire Department is the recipient of 2022 Firefighter of the Year Award. The annual award is given to someone who exemplifies the characteristics of a firefighter with an outstanding record of fire service achievements. Spanier, a seven-year veteran of the department, was formally recognized during an awards ceremony Sunday at Dining on the Green in the Village’s downtown. 

Park Forest Fire Chief Tracy Natyshok credits Spanier with going above and beyond in 2022.

"Over the past year, Joe has taken on a large role within the maintenance department as well as heading up the new engine committee," Natyshok said.

"Joe consistently puts in extra hours whether maintaining equipment and apparatus, heading up repairs, transporting vehicles to different vendors, and overall making sure all apparatus is in working condition to the best of his ability."

Natyshok also praised Spanier for his work ethic and dedication. He said that regardless of Spanier being on or off the clock, he's always making himself available and is a team player who makes others better. 

"Joe is always willing to come in on his off days to fix equipment or to get it to a vendor who can," Natyshok said. "He has consistently sacrificed his time with the betterment of the department as his main goal."

Natyshok said that the characteristics of a good firefighter are not restricted to simply heroic actions, but encompass all aspects of a productive, dedicated, and professional service at all levels. Spanier, a native of Grant Park, exemplified that most in 2022, Natyshok said.

As Fire Prevention Week approaches, the Park Forest Fire Department reminds residents that

“Fire won’t wait. Plan your escape”

The Park Forest Fire Department is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) —to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Fire Prevention Week (FPW), October 9-15, 2022.

This year’s FPW campaign, “Fire won’t wait. Plan your escape,” works to educate everyone about simple but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe from home fires. 

“Today’s homes burn faster than ever. You may have as little as two minutes (or even less time) to safely escape a home fire from the time the smoke alarm sounds. Your ability to get out of a home during a fire depends on early warning from smoke alarms and advance planning,” said Lorraine Carli, vice president of Outreach and Advocacy at NFPA.

The Park Forest Fire Department encourages all residents to embrace the 2022 Fire Prevention Week theme. Park Forest Fire Chief Tracy Natyshok says it is key for families to discuss what to do in a fire.

"Families should have a meeting and take a tour of their house and test the smoke alarms," said Natyshok. "Kids need to know what it sounds like when a smoke alarm goes off."

Natyshok says it’s important for everyone to plan and practice a home fire escape. He says Everyone needs to be prepared in advance, so that they know what to do when the smoke alarm sounds.

Additionally, every home is different, and Natyshok says every home fire escape plan will also be different, so people should have a plan for everyone in the home.

Park Forest Fire Department wants to share these key home fire escape planning tips:

• Make sure your plan meets the needs of all your family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.
• Smoke alarms should be installed inside every sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of your home. Smoke alarms should be interconnected so when one sounds, they all sound. 
• Know at least two ways out of every room, if possible. Make sure all doors and windows open easily.
• Have an outside meeting place a safe distance from your home where everyone should meet. 
• Practice your home fire drill at least twice a year with everyone in the household, including guests. Practice at least once during the day and at night.

The Park Forest Fire Department is hosting a series of events in support of this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, “Fire won’t wait. Plan your escape.”, including pop-up events from 4:30 - 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 10, at Talala School and Wednesday, and Oct. 12, at Michelle Obama. The public is encouraged to come to either event and enjoy the demonstrations, hands-on fire extinguisher training, giveaways, games, music, and a free slice of pizza and a drink for the first 50 attendees.

Additionally, the Park Forest Fire Department is hosting will have an Open House with fun activities, vendors, and demonstrations. The department will finish the evening with an outdoor movie that includes hot dogs and popcorn. The Open House will be from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Park Forest Fire Department located at 156 Indianwood Blvd.
