District 163 board approves reconfiguration of schools

The Board of Education approved Superintendent Joyce Carmine’s recommendation to reconfigure the District schools, which includes the creation of a magnet center in two schools for the opening of the 2014-2015 school. The schools will house the following grade levels:

School Grade Levels

21st Century K - 3
Mohawk K - 3
Blackhawk K - 3
Beacon Hill 4 - 8
Forest Trail 4 - 8
Algonquin Prekindergarten

Additionally, Beacon Hill School will be renamed with focus on the school of leadership for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics -- STEM; and Forest Trail will be renamed with focus on the School of Technology and the ARTS -- STAR. While each would be a magnet school with a specific focus, each school also would offer a traditional curriculum for the entire student body. Students would be assigned to the schools based on their residence; however, students of grades 4 through 8 who meet the eligibility criteria will be given the opportunity to choose either magnet school. Student eligibility would be based on a rubric that considers the student’s work ethic, quality of homework, completion of Reading Logs, attendance, behavior, and GPA.

Dr. Carmine said the following information meetings have been scheduled for families:

Algonquin – May 1, 2014 at 6 p.m.
21st Century – May 7, 2014 at 6 p.m.
Mohawk – May 22, 2014 at 6 p.m.
Blackhawk – May 20, 2014 at 6 p.m.
Beacon Hill – May 12, 2014 at 6 p.m.
Forest Trail – May 6, 2014 at 6 p.m.
