Discover Magazine returns after three-year hiatus

The Village of Park Forest is rolling out a summer edition of Discover Magazine, which will be the first time it's been published since before the pandemic.

Jason Miller, the assistant to the Village Manager and former communications coordinator, explained why the magazine hadn't been published in over three years.

"Right around the time the pandemic started, we had a Discover Magazine that was being cued up, but it never got finalized with all the changes that were happening when the pandemic started," Miller said. "Since then, we've had changes at the staff level and new elected officials."

Discover Magazine will feature various stories about the ongoing summer events happening in Park Forest. It'll also cover last year's construction projects and feature stories on select Village employees.

In addition to messaging from various departments at Village Hall, Miller noted that this summer edition of Discover Magazine would feature a message from the newly elected mayor, Joseph Woods.

Miller said the magazine's goal is to educate residents about the happenings in the Village. He said the best way to do that is to communicate with them about the positive things occurring in Park Forest.

"This edition of the magazine will feature a lot of our summer offerings," Miller said. "For the residents who've been here for a while, most are familiar with what happens in Park Forest for the summer - whether it be our Fourth of July parade, the Village Green concerts, or the Aqua Center."

Miller continued, "There are other things that have happened in the community over the past year that are good for residents to get a better understanding of - like construction projects that are going on. Residents probably have seen work being done but may not have the clearest picture of what is being done."

Miller noted the goal is to run Discover Magazine twice a year. However, he said since this magazine is expected to be delivered to Park Foresters by the end of June - the next magazine may come out right after the holiday season.

This summer's edition of Discover Magazine has a two-page cover story on Somonauk Park, the Village's second-largest park. Miller said the report would reflect on how the expansion of Somonauk Park came to be and inform residents of the new amenities the park will have once it's completed.
