It's that time of year again. Residents across Park Forest will get an opportunity to do some "spring cleaning" this fall during the village-wide garage sale on the last weekend of September.
James Guirguis, the village's communication specialist, is spearheading this year's event. He says not only will people get a chance to clean out the clutter in their houses, but the garage sale will also bring the community closer together.
"It's a great community event that allows people to come in from out of town and interact with Park Foresters," Guirguis said. "It also allows residents who aren't necessarily participating as sellers to venture into the neighborhoods, engage their neighbors, and even show their support by being sellers."
Guirguis says the annual event typically happens in September to dovetail with the Park Forest Art Fair set for Sept. 17 and 18, and now in its 66th year. The month of September also provides favorable weather for outdoor shopping.
"September is a great month for people to be able to sit down in their yards where it's not too blazing hot, and it's not too cold, and enjoy the day," Guirguis said. "And, they can enjoy interacting with fellow residents and enjoy interacting with people who may be out of town and coming into town participating as buyers in the village-wide garage sale."
If you're thinking about participating in the garage sale, taking place Sept. 24-25., there is still time to register. Over 90 participants have signed up thus far. The village expects that number to reach over 100 in the coming week.
"Registration is open until Sept. 14," said Guirguis. " Even if you are not registered, you can still participate."
Those who miss the registration deadline will not be included in the official listing of participating homes, but stand to still benefit from an increase in traffic in the community with out-of-town shoppers coming in to score deals.
Village officials also want residents to know that holding a garage sale is not limited to only the weekend of the Village-wide Garage Sale. Residents may hold garage sales at any time throughout the year and permits are not required.
