Students from Governors State University’s Summer STEAM Camp visited the Park Forest Fire Department for a day of activities tying science and technology to real life experiences in the fire service. They spent a whole day at the fire station covering many topics. Students began the day with a station tour and learned the history of the fire department. This also included a review of modern fire equipment and how technology has improved firefighting equipment like the use of thermal imaging to see through smoke. Next the students learned about water hydraulics and problem solved algebraic equations to compute fire flows and friction loss in fire hoses. They then used what they learned in the classroom and participated in hands on fire stream exercises outside. Afterwards students learned the base fundamentals of fire behavior and the scientific rationale of fire growth. They saw how lightweight materials has increased deadly fire flashovers to as quickly as 3 minutes giving little time to escape. The students then learned how the fire department needs to understand and use mechanical advantage systems when performing rope rescues. The class got to assist in operating a rope haul systems as they worked to move a rescue manikin off the ground. The group finished the day learning about fire extinguishers. This included a practical experience as each student used a fire extinguisher to extinguish a training fire. The students had a great time and the instructors look forward to returning again next year.
